The Metroid series of games has always been one of my favorites. Few other games have captured as well the sense of isolation, mystery and exploration. While Super Metroid is definitely my favorite of the bunch, Metroid 2 was the favorite GameBoy game in my collection when I was younger. Wandering around Planet SR388′s caverns and ruins helped me endure many long car trips in the back seat. This fan-made remake (using Metroid Zero Mission sprites and physics) looks fantastic!

SEGA’s Genesis system offered a lot in expandability. You could add Master System compatability, a CD-ROM attachment or a secondary procesing system called the 32x. The 32x was a substantial upgrade to the Genesis’ hardware and allowed for some fantastic video and audio effects. Check out this technical demonstration video that shows what this piece of hardware was capable of. The spinning and zooming at the beginning reminds me of video projets on an Amiga I worked on in high school. I wonder if we would have seen retail games that looked this good and smooth if SEGA had not rushed the Saturn’s release, abandoning the 32x?
