Many long-time Macintosh gamers remember the day when Bungie sold itself to Microsoft, bringing Halo to the XBox. To some, it felt like betrayal. A slap in the face from one of the greatest Mac game developers. They stayed with the platform through the darkest of times, when Apple was expected to go bankrupt and close up shop any day now. Through this sea of uncertainty, Bungie produced two amazing lines of games: the Marathon trilogy and the first two Myth RTS games.

Freeverse, maker of the excellent Burning Monkey Solitare has just released Marathon 2: Durandal for XBox 360′s Live Arcade. The game has received a massive face-lift, bringing 720p resolution and high-def textures. Take a look at the screenshots, and if you have a 360, be sure to nab this one. One of the best stories in the FPS genre. It’s cool to see Freeverse regarded so highly as to be trusted by Bungie to bring this to the 360. I remember when Freeverse was just starting out with “games” like Jared and Virtual Viagra.

And if you want to try out Durandal before buying it on XBLA, visit source.bungie.org, download the Durandal scenario, and the appropriate Aleph One for your OS. (And the Rubicon total conversion is a lot of fun, too).
